GoDaddy published a post about upcoming changes to GoDaddy auctions. As we look to the future of GoDaddy Auctions, we’re looking closely at how GoDaddy can best support domain name sellers. In order to better serve sellers, we’ll be focusing our resources on Afternic for selling domain names. Meanwhile, GoDaddy Auctions will focus its attention […]

GoDaddy auctions is for buying, Afternic for selling. No more 7 day public auctions

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The afternic marketplace is gone. Now GoDaddy is removing seller auctions. It definitely seems like there's room for a solid competitor to step up.

Hopefully Dynadot increases their PPC budget.

The reason for closing members 7 days auctions may be an attempt to redirect the buyers and their money to sole owned expired auctions.
It is an attempt to increase their profit by removing such sellers from the market. (100% profit is better then 15% or 25% commissions)

Seems rather stupid to me. 7 day public auctions are a good way to sell domains fast or that people no longer want. Not to mention, how much GoDaddy must make from their own dropped / expired auctions.
Expired auctions not going away. Just you cannot set up a public auction for 7 days. Which never do as well as expired auctions because so many domainer's don't want to put money in another domainer's pocket, they would rather give it to Daddy.

This is an absolute terrible business practice, giving only 15-30 day notice like this! Most domainers and businesses can't pivot that quickly, especially with selling domain names (for those who relied on the 7 day auction). I also think they planned for it for over a year but intentionally gave short notice, due to greed. I noticed they have been taking out small features over time, but didn't think they would close it totally.

I think someone in the office who doesn't sell domain names thought, hey we'll make more profit without member to member auctions. I don't think they realize that having more members/domainers participate in the auction helps a lot. So the end result is that they will actually lose revenue and profit, but not realize why and blame it on something else. We all know they will still make a lot of money in all other areas, but they don't have to screw members to do it.

Now because of how they rolled this out I'll no longer buy anything from GoDaddy and move my existing portfolio elsewhere.

This is the worst decision Godadyd have made since changing their old theme.

Now no one can list the 7 days auction, which is the option that works for me the most, also, now they won't make money from sellers who want to sell their domains on Godaddy.

They're killing their business by outsourcing this to Afternic.

Instead, they should keep the 7 days auction at least, so they can make money from it as well, but no strategy from the company or a plan for helping sellers selling their domains.

Now, no one will be interested in selling there, at all.

first off, they change the theme, now , everything is gone.

That's sad, from a big company like Godaddy. very sad.

Afternic:

"This is where you can get your domain names promoted to the largest audience of qualified buyers."

Basically domainers.

The smart thing would be for them to simply start a thread and ask, what do you want to help sell more domains? What would you like to see? Getting free input. Then implement what you can/what most seem to favor. Not sure what goes on behind the scenes, is it like Bob over in the corner deciding this stuff, is it a group of respected employees in a meeting, a few favored domainers?

Hi @NameMaxi.com
Thanks for your feedback. You're correct. In order to better serve sellers, Afternic will be the way to list domains for sale (Buy it Now and Offer/Counteroffer), and we'll be retiring 7 day public auctions.

Going forward, GoDaddy Auctions is focusing further on expired domain name auctions, and Afternic focuses on the sell-side.

For all the information, please take a look at our blog post and FAQs.
If you retire the 7 day public auctions on Godaddy, why don't you open the new 7 day auctions on Afternic, with that alternative, people who do domain flipping can still make the business going.

My takeaway was we will control what happens on GoDaddy auctions, the focus being expired auctions. They don't want sellers also selling stuff on there. GoDaddy auctions is for buying, Afternic is for selling. So they are trying to streamline each site so that it has a stated purpose.
This about sums up the situation.

Well Played Sir

My thoughts exactly - they are increasing profits not decreasing them

I was not using Godaddy 7-Day-Auctions, but I still listed all my domains both on Afternic and Godaddy (90 Days BIN/MO) separately because I never trusted Godaddy's algorithms at all.

Take the example mergeverse . com which I listed a few days ago with BIN on Afternic (and not on GD anymore). When I type mergeverse . com on Godaddy, I don't get the BIN offer from Afternic, instead I get the usual brokerage offer for 69$ (a huge sales roadblock!). If I type the domain name on Namecheap or elsewhere, I get the correct BIN offer from Afternic.

So I assume that my Afternic listings are now buried somewhere in GD's algos with low chances of selling through GD...

Just got the e-mail...

Starting April 29, 2024, GoDaddy Auctions will no longer accept new listings in three categories:
  • Offer/Counteroffer
  • Buy Now
  • 7-Day Member-to-Member Public Auction
To better serve you, we'll be focusing all our resources on creating a top-notch experience on Afternic for selling domains and GoDaddy for buying domains.

What this means for you:
  • Existing auctions and pending transactions won't be affected. They'll be allowed to close as usual
  • All Member-to-Member listings will be removed by May 13. You can manage and download your records from these listings through seller portal until then.
  • Afternic-listed domains will still be available on GoDaddy Auctions through syndication.
With these changes, we're excited to build an even stronger future for buying and selling domains across our platforms. Visit our blog post for a more detailed explanation or reach out to me with any questions.

yes, I agree with you bro but now whats the best alternative to sell the domain in the auction?

Sedo is having a Great Domains auction. In any case, I will be revisiting Sedo as one possible option.

They certainly need to step up their game.

This change might make DaaZ more popular?

Wishful thinking. I tried an auction there a few days ago, they've got a long way to go. Specifically with ownership verification, and verifying bidder funds. As a dan.com alternative, their auctionBot escrow works well for domainer to domainer sales.

This + NameLiquidate demise = a void in customer to customer auction options

Totally agreed with you.

at least if they want to move the BIN/Make offer listings to Afternic, they shouldn't remove the 7 days auctions on their platform, or at least, they can move it to Afternic instead.

That's sad actually, now all of my business will get shutdown in the couple days because of that, as majority of my sales are comes from the 7 days auction.

Even Sedo who run their business for many years now, they still do the 7 days auctions as usual with no problem, also why they notice us just for 30 days. there are people who live and make money that way.

Personally, I cannot believe in this. The guys behind the scenes who works for the company, will surely destroy the company and their revenue by time.

totally sad..
This is an important lesson. Never rely on one company for your revenue.

I never had much luck with auctions on there. Despite the high fees, the system was designed to give expiring domain auctions much more visibility than auctions posted by members (I don't know why anyone would intentionally prefer to avoid them). I'm sometimes amazed at the high bids on mediocre expiring domains.

Will I still be able to access the “Sold” page?

The “Sold” tab within the Seller portal will be available until May 13th, 2024

My domain flipping domain business is highly replied on the 7-day public auctions, now they removed it, and destory my business completely.

I actually get sales from this part. Part of my routine of listing domains is to put them for Offer/Counteroffer at GoDaddy.

It says:

"Member to Member Buy it Now and Offer/Counter Offer listings will remain live and available until May 13th, 2024. We recommend moving your domain listings to Afternic before then."

I guess that's not available now?

Only thing I'm using Afternic for right now are adding domains with Buy Now prices to get in the Fast Transfer network.
Hi @JB Lions
We're happy to clarify this for you.

Up until May 13th, you'll be able to continue using GoDaddy Auctions to manage Buy it Now and Offer/Counteroffer listings. After that, active Member to Member listings will be removed from GoDaddy Auctions.

If you haven't explored Afternic much, we recommend using the 4 weeks until May 13th to get familiar with the platform. Afternic.com has a lot of information about seller services and features while Afternic's blog is a useful destination for the latest news and feature updates.

If you have any questions about the retirement of Member to Member listings from GoDaddy Auctions, our blog post covers a lot of ground, and the Auctions support team is ready to help you via [email protected].

yeah, for me 100% of my business is now destroyed because of that.

what's the loss they will get if they keep it? I can't understand this Godaddy thing
I agree, I'm in the same boat with you guys! This really is a big negative hit with very short notice!

You have other options: Namejet, DropCatch, Sav, Dynadot

At GoDaddy or other marketplaces, user listed auctions don't get same amount of bidding like the expired domains. Amount of bids you get will depend on how and where you promote the auction.
Exactly, this thread has the unique distinction of all the successful Public auction users at GoDaddy. Most get zero bids, a lot of domainers out of principle will not bid on a public auction. Even if it's no reserve. I remember years ago, a friend was targeting a niche, I see a name at auction I text him it's $25 he was paying expired auctions up to $500. Simple right? He texts me at first thanks Man. Half hour later I get, "Hey asshole that was a public auction, no thanks!!!"

You absolutely have to promote them and at no reserve.
