By now, you've most likely heard about the news that Tesla have bought Tesla.com. On February 18th, DomainNameWire broke the news of Tesla Motors' new acquisition, and that afternoon we were able to speak with Stu Grossman, the seller of Tesla.com, about why he finally sold the domain name.
Over the next few days, major media outlets picked up on the story, and Tesla's CEO Elon Musk confirmed the acquisition in a tweet. Whilst no pricing details have been released, the domain sale has made international news. However, is there more to this story?
Have Tesla finally acquired Tesla.com because they're going to be changing their company name from Tesla Motors to simply Tesla? In 2007, before the iPhone came out, "Apple Computers" became simply "Apple" and subsequently, the company made history by introducing the iPhone, the App Store, and then followed that with the iPad and Apple Watch.
To me, it seems interesting that Tesla Motors have acquired Tesla.com after 13 years of happily using TeslaMotors.com as their domain name. Is it purely a defensive acquisition for the company? Perhaps, but I would like to bet that the company is preparing to move in a different direction or enter into new verticals and buying Tesla.com is the first telltale sign of that.
With Tesla Motors successful range of electric cars (in particular, the Model S, which is the World's best selling plug-in electric vehicle) very firmly embedded in the future of the automotive industry, I think that the company could be developing new ideas that aren't related to vehicles.
With renewable energy and energy storage at the heart of the company, we could see Tesla expand into home energy solutions, power packs, or an as-yet untapped industry.
Domain acquisitions can often tell a lot about a company's future plans. There have been many occasions when Jamie Zoch of DotWeekly has uncovered a company's plans via domain name registrations months before any official announcements.
I will be keeping my eye on potential new domain registrations from Tesla to see whether there really is more to this acquisition of Tesla.com. Let us know what you think and if you notice anything!
