Does that mean they don't work? No, but you risk of being slapped by Penguin or a manual penalty. May want to think twice about what kind of links you send to a site that's important to you.

Start from the top, middle and bottom.

Meta isn't as effective, but it is sometimes used. Open graph for social sharing is more SMM, but improves your CTR on shared posts.

Permalink structure containing keywords.

Appropriate title tags.

Section content using H* tags containing keywords.

Use keywords in articles and anchor text them to other articles on site and off site resources.

Emphasize keywords with em, bold, strong, italics (use wisely as they are used for different purposes such as nesting).

Images with alt and title attributes.

Schema markup.

Most importantly, don't keyword stuff. Use a maximum of 4% of your text (I go for 2.5-3) containing three targeted phrases / words.
