I've tried to register some nice .gdn domains since last year but they all got rejected as reserved. They were very expensive therefore I was only going for one, maybe two.

I noticed recently that 101domain has them at $2.99 per year. WHAT, $2.99 per year? I tried many names and they had a premium price tag for the first year and a high rate per renewal. I didn't want to do that so I went looking for some $2.99 per year domains as advertised.

I wound up registering 36 chip LLL.gdn domains, 33 went through and 3 still processing. I was in heaven thinking dang LLL chips and the extension is chips too. Again I'm thinking wow just $2.99 per year while doing this.

I got to thinking tonight that this was to good to be true, so I logged in and went to renew one of the domains and the renewal is $384.99 per year.

So to make a long story short I F'd up but it was misleading saying /SALE/ .gdn $2.99 / yr.. Yes it's $2.99 for one year and then $384.99 to renew and this wan't clear to me.

I do admit that if I would have used the drop down for more years that it in fact shows the increase but I always reg a year and leave them on auto renew so I didn't click the drop down.

I reached out for an explanation as to why this isn't explained better during registration but I'm pretty sure I have one year to try and move some of these before renewal time comes around.

I've posted this as a warning, something to watch out for as I personally haven't ran into this type of situation before.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I swear, domainers will buy any extension that's short, even if the registry scams you I guess. Just know before loading up on 3N, 3L, etc., that there will be another short extension tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day...

Robert - You're seeing things that aren't there.

Dot .Photo - it's about photo(s).

Dot .CN - it's about China, per the ccTLD.

Dot .lol - it's about funny stuff.

Dot .GuangDong - doesn't exist yet.

.GDN can mean GoDaddy Network, with a little imagination!

Thats another TLD good for the bin. So they try to scam the registrant, great strategy. Feels desperate.

Actually come to find out it's not .gdn doing wrong it's 101domain using deceptive ways to gain registrations. And inflating the renewals over five times higher than the two other registers pointed out within the thread.

Even .gdn said in an email to me it was wrong and their renewals are not $384.99.

Now 101 is telling me they can't get the pricing the others are getting, come on I was born at night but not last night. I highly suggest if anyone does want a .gdn use one of the others that's been discussed and don't make the same mistake I did at 101. I do a lot of business with them but after this I'm moving elsewhere on future registrations!

I see tonight you can't register one at 101domain, everything you key in shows unavailable. Good hope they're getting flooded with complaints...

This just shows you how messed up 101domain.com is with .gdn. .GDN was down earlier but I did this wild test to see what happened.

Put in a crazy domain off the top of my head, abkjetcan.gdn. First year is $2.99 and I actually checked their drop down this time for more years and it's $695.98 if you want to go 2 years. So even if I would have checked the drop down it's still stupid pricing on their behalf.

I've got to share this with the registry, it's insane... See attached...

This is the way a register should show renewals and GoDaddy.com does it the right way! See attached, it's very transparent vs 101.

@mad409 Since dotintra is offering 3 yrs for $12.50, see if they could make you a bulk transfer deal, it's worth asking anyway. Or if not at least $60 is a vast improvement over $385. Plus you have a year to keep checking for a transfer deal, if other registrars start offering gdn.

I remember finding 101 years ago and being fascinated just because they had so many int'l, little did I know then how simple it is to find better quality and way cheaper pricing elsewhere.

Thanks, waiting to hear from them, nominate said transfer is $70 with one year renewal included. I'm working on something but really wanted to point out when starting this thread what to look for and the deception from this register101domain.com.

I think I've pretty much exhausted my point. :D

I agree dotintra, or nominate is the best bet. :!:

I also love when my so called 101domain.com rep, I'm your contact person reads my emails but never replies, what a freakin joke...

Update - 101 advised today they are reaching out to the registry and will give me an update when they hear something. Finally, hopefully they will get in line with the others in the near future...

Can't seem to find the .50 cent domains for the first year at dotintra, gdn which I'm sure are the worst but noticed the banner running here at NP so where's the .50?

I entered crap and it's still $2.99 for the first year! :)

Pricing is f-ing up an extension that has a generic future like xyz IMO...

If you read the promo it says $.50 first year* $6.00 each subsequent year with minimum 3 year registration
So enter a domain and use the drop down for three years, then you will see the promo.

If you only go for 1 or 2 years now, here's the breakdown of cost over time
1 year - $2.99 ....................$122.99/3 yrs .............$41.00/yr
2 years - $6.99.....................$ 66.99/3yrs...............$22.33/yr
3 years - $12.50...................$ 12.50/3 yrs...............$ 4.16/yr

It looks like 101domain.com has made some changes with their .gdn pricing. Although this wasn't offered when I registered a bunch of them, so I still need to talk further about my regs but at least I can renew at $75.00 per year now instead of $384.99 per year. With that being said even $75.00 per year isn't bad for an end user wanting a nice clean generic LLL.gdn IMO.

It appears they listened, or .gdn contacted then about my complaints but either way a thumbs up to both of them for listening IMO.. :)

I've attached their new .gdn pricing, 101domain.

@mad409 I saw the ad on NP last week too and I reached out to them for clarification. So basically, the total 3 year registration will cost you 12.50 (0.5 year1+ 6 yr2 + 6yr3). I believe it is just a way of marketing it as we are actually getting .gdn for 0.5 for the first year if we do 3 yrs with them...I actually bought a couple and it works :)

@mad409 I can't wait to tell you this. .gdn renewal has been dropped to $9.98. I think we were right about them and that they will reduce the renewal if it does well. So far they sold 16000+ . I am happy because I invested in it although it is too early.

@Frank Demitri

Was able to find five more LLL at reg. fee even though many are $750.00 and up.

DNX
RNX
RTY
SDF
SNX

.GDN

I'm pretty sure that most of the reg fee LLL's will be gone soon.

I would try to get a refund if you can.
This is what erks my about alot of new tlds.

Me too.

I like the new gTLDs but I refuse to register any that are employing this bait and switch tactic where the price shoots up to a ridiculous yearly fee after the first year.

To me that indicates a business model that is scum and I don't care how nice the TLD seems, I don't want to do business with those who seek to take advantage of me.

It's a major problem.

I'm not sure if it is the registries or the registrars to blame, but it needs to be made very clear what the renewal price is before purchase and with many registrars anyway that isn't the case.

Even the cats on the street could have predicted the reduction of .gdn renewal fees.

It simply couldn't survive with high renewal fees.

They lowered the fee's and corrected their issues.

The G in .gdn probably stands for greedy.
