information Breaking: Bidding on 27.com Closes at Over $1.5mm

Spaceship Spaceship
One of the most highly anticipated domain auctions in recent history has just ended at NameJet, with 27.com reaching a final price of $1,510,702. This price was below NameJet's reserve for the domain, and so the name failed to sell. A public auction for a two-number .COM is a very rare occurrence, but this novelty failed to help the domain sell above the reserve.

With just 100 available, the sale of two-number .COM domains are extremely rare, with the last public domain sale being 37.com, which sold privately for $2.1mm in 2014. Earlier this year, NamePros interviewed the owners of 37.com to find out more about their domain acquisition.

NamePros has shared two other two-number .COM domain sales; 77.com and 73.com. Although no data was revealed publicly, we believe the names sold for around $5mm and $2mm respectively. This would tend to suggest that deals done privately are often more lucrative for the seller of an ultra-premium domain, than using a marketplace auction.

27.com, which was put up for sale by NamePros member @sevent, attracted four bidders over $1mm. If you followed the auction, you will have seen multiple bids from NameJet member "first". This account is owned by a Chinese domain marketplace and bidding service that allows Chinese investors to bid on domains from several foreign domain marketplaces. The bidding activity from "first" would suggest two or more Chinese investors were looking to buy the name.

From what I can find, I believe that 27.com's final price sets a record for the highest bid received on the NameJet platform, beating AT.com's $1.5mm bid earlier this year.

Two-number .COM domains are highly sought after by other domain investors and end-users in Asia, with 61 out of a possible 100 names currently owned by Chinese companies or individual investors.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
They probably should have targeted chinese investors, starting with some type of outreach to the current chinese owners of other nn.com's. Imo

Great insight, if 37.com, sold for $2.1mm in 2014 then, this should have better or equal better chance.

So much lower than previous similar sales. BTW, 27 is a good number, and may mean 爱妻 (beloved wife), 爱钱 (love money), 爱吃 (love eating), 爱情 (love and romance), 爱财 (love wealth), and 爱车 (love car). Can be used in many business fields.

There was a fair amount of outreach. A few key people were sitting on the sidelines waiting for reserve to be met before bidding to avoid the competition. I've already had someone contact me with "so..."

James,You are right re ROI on private sales, good to leave something on the table but not as much as I think the turn will be? The very limited number of 2 number com's bodes well for Chinese home market brands such as 八8 com = 88

八8 is not 88 if properly translated. Chinese prefer to use numbers not Chinese characters in real life
when referring to numbers.

Since chinese characters take longer to type and are more information dense (average word 1-2 chars) tThe best english translation would be 8Eight. Do you believe this is a good domain?

It is more like a Word+ a Digit combined.

So you are kidding yourself if you believe this is a two number string.

Speaking of the Chinese market,
What do you think about the .bo domains?
Do you think that this extension is the next hype?
I'm asking because I saw an article implying this but couldn't tell if it is genuine or ordered (this extension is very expensive...).

It is a Single character + Single number = 八8 what is important is what is cognitive, short (mobile) and carries culturally significant as a potential brand. AI 2 AI will read this as 88. "Dordomai" if your Chinese then I can but take note and bow to your cognitive reaction. Yes 8八 is great domain I wish I had.

I am not Chinese but to my best knowledge Pinyin as Number + Number e.g ba76 (876) have not been selling well or been in high demand. I don't know of any high profile sales. Follow the money.

Generally Numbers and Words are not mixed I believe just like we don't say five6seven. Either we say FivehundredSixtySeven or 567.

If you mix Chinese words or characters with western numbers you don't have a numeric domain and thus you don't have a domain that is as valuable or in demand as numerics.

To type a chinese character you usually need to write several letters BTW so it isn't as short as it might seem.

So these are not NN domains even if some might claim that they are.

This would be like saying the domain ZedX.com is the same as ZX.com

Obviously these two would be much different even though they are read and pronounced the same way.

I do not/would not translate the brand. The potential brand is 八8 (com) the character does literally translate to "eight" the Chinese cognitively know what 八 means and when twined with the numeral 8 the mindset will be 88 - the "brand' is 八8 (com) (Alibaba reg the cn) I requisitioned some Chinese students in London to use there mobiles 八8 com it was almost seamless second time in favorites instant. For me it is the brand & mindset that counts. The jury is out for now and I can wait.

I closely followed the auction and somehow never believed it would hit reserve cause it was kinda slow somehow. I am sure it will sell for muvh higher than it ended . Good luck to the seller

So NameJet just lets it expire or they keep it for themselves and stick a BIN price on it? I don't use NJ which is why I probably sound naive. :)

I think Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Robert Johnson and Kurt Cobain should have made a bid, oh hang on .....

NAmejet does auctions too, not just expired domains.
